Scripture:Matthew1:18-23 Sermon title：" Joseph was faithful to the law "
Today is the second advent
This week and next week I chose the Bible verses about Jesus' father, Joseph.
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about. (verse 18)
His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. (verse 18)
Joseph did not know for the first time that Mary’s
pregnancy was by the Holy Spirit.
Only he knew the fact that Mary was pregnant.
He did not want to expose Mary to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
In Judaism the engagement was legally considered as
equally as marriage. The difference is that marriage is to live together.
According to the law of Judea, what will happen to such a case in general?
There is Jewish teaching, If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, (Deuteronomy 24: 1).
There is also, If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 22: 23, 24).
The Bible has the following description.
The teachers of the law brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before Jesus and asked, “In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” (John8:1-11)
Let us go back to Joseph’s case. Bible described that Joseph always did what was right. He was faithful to the law.
To obey the law is a right act. It can be said that teachers who brought a woman before Jesus used the law correctly. But Joseph did not.
He did not want to expose her to public disgrace,
he had in mind to divorce her quietly (verse 19)
The "faithful to the law" of the Bible means that the law is not an inflexible manner of use,
is a way of use that has a passion to think about Mary. It is love and kindness for Mary by Joseph!
But after he had considered this, (Verse 20) an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and give him the name Jesus,” (verses 20 - 24)
Joseph accepts only the angels of the Lord who
appeared in his dreams without obstructing obedience.
Why?. " he had considered this, (verse 20) It means that he did not decide it yet completely. Then the angles came. He trustfully accepted the telling without obligation because it was the solution that would support Joseph's thoughts.
Joseph did not want to break their engagement nor let
Mary go. So he was frustrating and thinking.
May be the angels push Joseph's righteousness.
In other words, God chose a man named Joseph with the " righteousness " God demanded.
Joseph is not brilliant in the Bible. There is little description about him.
But as he was a man of righteousness God entrusted him with a noble plan.
Do we have the righteousness that God is expecting?
